Joe Kazen (Class of 1987)

Kazen was among the best linebackers in Durfee’s history and averaged better than 100 yards per game in the Durfee backfield. He was the team’s 1986 MVP, led Durfee in tackles, sacks, blocked punts, field goals and extra points. He also ranks among the Red & Black’s best wrestlers. He scored 86 points, reached the South Sectional finals as a senior, and won the Take Down tournament in Rhode Island.

Scott Santos (Class of 1987)

Santos played ice hockey, football and tennis and excelled at all three sports. He finished his hockey career as the highest scorer in the school’s history with 158 points. He was a three-year all-star, became Durfee’s all-time leading hockey scorer as a junior when he surpassed 116 points. Santos also was an outstanding performer on the football and tennis teams.

Mike Herren (Class of 1989)

Herren was twice named the Boston Globe and Boston Herald Player of the Year while leading the Hilltoppers to two state championships. Durfee won 96 of 104 games during his tenure and he graduated as the Hilltoppers’ highest scorer in history with 1,967 points, Mike was the Gatorade New England and Massachusetts Player of the Year in both 1988 and 1989.

    

 


Juddy McDonald Small Pic

Juddy McDonald (Class of 1989)

McDonald, who recorded 200 assists in a single season, was the point guard on the 1988 and 1989 state championship teams and the spearheaded both the offense and defense. He was twice named to the Boston Globe All-State team and was a first team member of the USA Today high school all-star team and led the Hilltoppers to a 70-4 record over his career.

Jack Campbell

Campbell, a 1967 graduate of Boston Tech High School, began his coaching career at Durfee in 1974 as an assistant basketball coach. He began a 16-year run as the girls softball coach in 1981 and won six league titles, two South Sectional crowns and an Eastern Massachusetts championship en route to a 266-93 record.
 
Campbell was an assistant to Karam during the 1977 and 1984 state championships, was twice named the Boston Globe Division One “Coach of the Year,” and also coach tennis at Durfee for two seasons, guiding the netmen to a league title in 2005 after a 15-4 season. He was inducted into the Massachusetts High School Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1998

1984 Boys Basketball Team Pic

The 1984 basketball team won the Southeastern Massachusetts Conference crown and the Eastern Massachusetts championship. Karam coached the 1984 boys basketball team to 25 straight victories, finishing the season unbeaten with the Massachusetts State title in hand.
 
The 1984 basketball team comprised coaches Karam and Campbell, players Brian O’Neil, Paul Hart, Nick Salmon, Vic Pereira, Bobby Hargraves, Joe Stanton, John Carvalho, Tim White, John D’Ambrosio, Paul Donnelly, Mike Pontes, Tom “Skippy” Karam, Tom D’Ambrosio, Mitch Lown, and managers Allen Perreault and Ron Tripp.
