Health Assisting
Program Overview:
The Health Assisting program is a standards based American Red Cross approved program that gives students an opportunity to explore the world of work in the area of health care. At this time, nursing is a competitive career requiring that students be prepared to focus on positive work habits, have the ability to problem solve and demonstrate respect for individual and cultural diversity. Upon completion of this program, students are eligible to take the state certification exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. Additional certifications acquired through this program are: Home Health Aide, American Red Cross First Aid/CPR, OSHA.

Program Sequence:
Health Assistant I: 10th Grade
The Health Assistant I program is an introductory course that begins in tenth grade for one period and is a year in length. This program is a standard based Red Cross approved program designed to give students an opportunity to explore career pathways in the area of health care. During this course students will also begin the preparatory work to attain a Nursing Assistant Certification. Students who maintain an average of seventy or above are eligible to return for the Health Assistant II program.

Health Assistant II: 11th Grade
The Health Assistant II course utilizing two periods per day for a full year. Students must maintain a seventy average throughout the course. Students need to master information regarding human anatomy, disease processes, the human aging process, and acquire the nursing care skills needed to become eligible to participate in the clinical area at a long-term care facility. Students will also learn to adapt their nursing skills in the role of the Home Health Aide.
The Health Assistant II course utilizing two periods per day for a full year. Students must maintain a seventy average throughout the course. Health Assistant II: 11th Grade (Honors)
The Health Assistant II Honors course is a course for students who have a Grade Point Average of 3.2 or higher. Students meet one period per day for a full year and must keep pace with the two-period class. Students who participate in this class will complete their clinical rotation at a long-term care facility during the following summer. Students are responsible for purchasing uniforms, have a yearly physical exam, Tuberculin test and proof of health insurance, and transportation to the clinical site for their clinical experience. Upon completion of the clinical requirement, the student will be eligible to apply for certification testing at the American Red Cross.
The Health Assistant II Honors course is a course for students who have a Grade Point Average of 3.2 or higher. The Health Assistant III is a four period per day course and is a year in length. Students must maintain a seventy average throughout the course. After becoming First Aid and CPR Certified, students apply their knowledge and skills in the long-term and acute care settings with elderly residents and acutely ill patient. Students will acquire clinical skills and explore health related fields in the ancillary departments. Students are responsible for purchasing uniforms, have a yearly physical exam, Tuberculin test and proof of health insurance, and transportation to the clinical site for their clinical experience. Transportation from the clinical site to B.M.C. Durfee High School will be provided. Note: Students will be required to have a uniform as determined by the instructor.
