Rob Ponte Pic

ROBERT PONTE (CLASS OF 1975)
The late Bob Ponte was the recipient of the Block of Granite Award as the area’s best lineman and also received the Trevino Award as Durfee’s top performer: He was an All-Scholastic player as a junior and senior and named to the Boston Herald All-Scholastic team. Bob was a three-year starter on the gridiron and an outstanding performer on the Hilltoppers track team.

 

    


Tim Montle Pic

TIM MONTLE (CLASS OF 1982)
Montle was an outstanding wrestler for four years as a Hilltopper and an excellent defensive end on the football team. A co-captain for two seasons, Tim was an All-Scholastic performer in wrestling where he finished second in the South Sectionals for two years, fifth in the State competition and won the Soter Takedown Tournament.

 

    


Chris Rezendes Pic

CHRIS REZENDES (CLASS OF 1987)
Rezendes quarterbacked Durfee for two seasons and gained All-State status. He led the Hilltoppers in scoring in both his junior and senior years, finishing with 18 rushing and 14 passing TDs. Chris also had an outstanding track career, setting school records in the 50-and-100-yard dashes and was a member of the record setting 4X400 relay team. He was inducted into the National Football Foundation High School Hall of Fame as a senior and represented the Hilltoppers in the annual Shriners All-Star game.

 


Holly Thompson Pic

HOLLY THOMPSON (CLASS OF 1990)
Holly was a three-star athlete, gaining Boston Globe A.il-Scholastic recognition in volleyball (1989) and softball (1989-1990) and the Durfee MVP Award as a senior in basketball. She was the Hilltoppers MVP as a junior and senior in both volleyball and softball and won the Karen Jarabek Memorial Award as the top scholar athlete as a senior.

 

    


Doug Smith Pic

DOUG SMITH (CLASS OF 1991)
Doug was an outstanding hockey player and golfer and still holds Durfee’s single game hockey scoring record of eight goals. Doug was the captain and MVP in his final two seasons; the Big Three Conference MVP in 1991 and named to all area all-star teams. He finished with 107 points, on 60 goals and 47 assists. Smith also spent four years on the golf team and was named the MVP each year; He was first with a par-71 in the state team finals and led the Hilltoppers to a 15-1 record and SEMC title in 1990. Doug also contributed to the Red & Black’s 1991 Big Three soccer championship.
 


Chris Herren Pic

CHRIS HERREN (CLASS OF 1994)
Herren is the highest scorer in Durfee history with 2,073 points and the only member of the school’s - 2,000 point club. Chris also holds the single game record of 60 points. An All-Scholastic performer for four years, Herren was named to the All-State team as a junior and senior. Following a successful college career, Chris signed an NBA contract and played for the Denver Rockets and Boston Celtics.
 

    


Marc Megna Pic

MARK MEGNA (CLASS OF 1994)
Marc may be the best linebacker ever to play at Durfee. An All-State performer, Marc led the Hilltoppers with 157 tackles in 1993 and following his graduation and four years at Richmond University, was named the Virginia Player of the Year in 1998. He was also a 1-AA All-America and played in the Hula Bowl before signing an NFL contract and competing with New York Jets, New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals. Megna also was an all-league player in the Canadian Football League.
 

 


BOYS BASKETBALL 1988 & 1989
The 1988 and 1989 Durfee High School boys basketball team won two straight Massachusetts state championships, Head coach Tom “Skip” Karam and assistant Bob Dempsey guided the Hilltoppers to amazing back-to-back state titles and a Durfee record 46 consecutive victories. The 1988 team, behind all-state performers Matt Attar and Mike Herren, defeated Chicopee Comprehensive, 68-64, to win the’ state title and the following season, the 1989 team won its second straight Massachusetts crown with an 82-74 triumph over Springfield Central.
