 WATSON FAMILY COOKING NIGHT

This year, for the first time, Watson in conjunction with UMass Extension SNAP-ED Program, hosted two Family Cooking Nights in March.  The first included healthy eating tips and inexpensive yet healthy ingredients as well as a chance for our parents to help in preparing the dinner menu for the evening: black bean soup, a Mediterranean couscous, and a pot roasted beef. The second night was all about the children.  They heard the story Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and then assisted the UMass students in creating  'kid-friendly' healthy snacks that included Italian breadstick popcorn, seasoned with grated cheese and Italian seasoning; pineapple apple snap salad made with apples, raisins and yogurt, and milky maple soda drinks made with milk, maple syrup and unflavored soda water.  Everyone had a great time and each family received a Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs family cookbook!

Everyday Reading Comprehension Activities for You and Your Child to Do at Home

Reading comprehenstion helps children in all school subjects, gives them an advantage in standardized tests and can turn them into lifelong lovers of literature.  Here are some everyday reading comprehension activities you can try:

1. Read, read, read!  Read to your children every day.  Make it part of your bedtime routine, an after-dinner activity or a fun way to spend time on the couch.

2. Set a good example by letting your child see you read.

3. Use pre-reading comprehension techniques. Before reading, have your child look at the cover and the inside pictures and predict what the story is about.

4. Read books together and discuss.  At the end of each chapter, discuss what happened. Allowing children to retell a story that they read lets them practice comprehension skills.
