Samuel Watson Elementary School

  ATTENTION...

  • Thursday, March 5th is NOT an early release day.
  • It is also our RED & WHITE Day in honor of reading week.
  • Due to weather conditions we are postponing our Dr. Seuss Family Event until next Thursday, March 12th from 3:30 - 5:00.
  • Please be sure to make an appointment with your child's teacher to discuss and receive your child's report card.

You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child!

                                                                                   - Dr. Seuss

Join us during our first annual Watson Reading Week!  There will be storytelling, reading buddies, parent breakfast with books, a parade and a Dr. Seuss Family Night!  Please join us in getting the word out to your children that reading is important and everyone needs to read everyday!

Everyday Reading Comprehension Activities for You and Your Child to Do at Home

Reading comprehenstion helps children in all school subjects, gives them an advantage in standardized tests and can turn them into lifelong lovers of literature.  Here are some everyday reading comprehension activities you can try:

1. Read, read, read!  Read to your children every day.  Make it part of your bedtime routine, an after-dinner activity or a fun way to spend time on the couch.

2. Set a good example by letting your child see you read.

3. Use pre-reading comprehension techniques. Before reading, have your child look at the cover and the inside pictures and predict what the story is about.

4. Read books together and discuss.  At the end of each chapter, discuss what happened. Allowing children to retell a story that they read lets them practice comprehension skills.
