COMMON CORE VIDEO SERIES - ELA/LITERACY
___________________________________________________________________________________
The Common Core standards are explained in depth by David Coleman and Kate Gerson. Educators and administrators will learn step-by-step how to implement the Common Core for ELA/Literacy and Math in their schools and classrooms. You’ll also gain a deeper understanding of the rationale behind the Common Core and what it will mean for students across our state.
Balancing Informational Text and Literature
This is a 10 minute video which features a discussion between NYS Commissioner of Education John B. King Jr., David Coleman (contributing author to the Common Core) and Kate Gerson (a Sr. Fellow with the Regents Research Fund) addressing Shift 1 – PK-5: Balancing Informational Text and Literature.
Building Knowledge in the Disciplines - Grades 6-12
The discussion addresses the role of the content area teachers in secondary contexts as well as the benefits of giving literary non-fiction the time it deserves in the secondary ELA classroom. After watching this video, educators might ask themselves: What does it demand? What are the implications for our school/ department/ district? What will this mean we have to change about our practice? What challenges will we face as we make this shift?
The discussion addresses the benefits and challenges in shifting to a practice where all students are asked to encounter grade-level complex texts.
The discussion addresses the “tiers” of vocabulary (see Isabel Beck’s work, for example) and the choices teachers need to make regarding the explicit teaching of “academic” vocabulary.
David Coleman, a contributing author to the Common Core State Standards, models a close reading of Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.”
Preparing for Close Reading of Text
This conversation represents one of the ways a group of educators might prepare for close reading of text with students. This behind-the-scenes discourse represents the kind of dialogue teachers can have as they build their own fluency and familiarity with a text before diving into it with students.
COMMON CORE VIDEO SERIES - MATHEMATICS
This is a 15-minute video which features a discussion between NYS Commissioner of Education John B. King Jr., David Coleman (contributing author to the Common Core) and Kate Gerson (a Sr. Fellow with the Regents Research Fund) addressing Shift 1 –Focus. By unpacking Shift 1, the discussion addresses the benefits of giving the areas of focus articulated in the Common Core the time it deserves in the elementary classroom.
By unpacking these shifts, the discussion addresses ways in which teacher and student skill can develop into deep understanding and facility through an increased attention to coherence across grades, fluency in basic functions, and real world application.
