Phoenix Nest

Faculty Advisor: Shannon Dufresne

The Phoenix Nest is Durfee's literary magazine. We publish various types of student work, ranging from poetry, fiction, essays, and artwork. The Phoenix is an annual tradition at Durfee and hopes to become a bi-annual publication by next year.

Students meet monthly in the library to discuss their work, peer edit, and compile writing. The group also hopes to plan field trips to Boston's Grub Street writing workshops and are selling ad space to meet that goal. The Phoenix Nest is open to all students at Durfee and is a fantastic creative outlet for those who love to write!

Who Am I?

By Mackenzie Crumley

My culture means a lot to me
Something I cannot let go
If I went throughout life without
Four things don’t know what I’d do
Without family, friends, sports, or music
I don’t know who id is
When having all of these I’m like a kid in a candy shop
Nothing better than this

Being many ethnicities a few come to mind
I’m Portuguese, French, Italian, and Scottish
But my major one is Portuguese
With good food and good people
What more could I ask for?

My borderlands are always there,
No matter where I am
My borderlands is how I look, my body type
I’m scared to go anywhere.
When I'm in school I'm as self-conscious as a midget
Like everyone is staring and talking shit about me
But I am who I am and I have to accept it
Other people can not bother me

I'm a basketball goddess to you

People are little angels

Try to guard me, there goes your ankles

I'm trying to tell you that I will spank you

This talent is great so god

I thank you

All I need is you to give me the ball

And I will do it all

The way other people play

Straight bore me

And this is just basketball

Baseball is a different story

I will beat you on the field or the court

It don’t matter, I'm nasty at both sports

I like it when I dribble up and down the court

Just saying I love these sports

My ethnicity is Spanish and Puerto Rican

My people eat meat and rice I'm not a vegan

I'm also American and white

If you go to my backyard,

we have water balloon fights

I'm also Indian besides Spanish and white

Indians invented some medicines

They were so bright

I'm tan like the jersey shore cast

I go shopping to look my best

One of my borderlands is the beach

I never go in the water where my feet cant reach

In not comfortable reading this poem

Id rather be in bed sleeping at home

I'm scared of planes

If I were on one Id go insane

They go high above the ground

It could crash and I could drown

Reading this poem is like being on a plane

If I don’t stop now ill go insane.

My culture is what’s most important to me

Its what I live for and what id die for

Soccer with your feet, with your hands you’re a cheat

In hockey with your hands, many fans cheering in the stands

Up on their feet, my family is what’s always there for me

Thick and thin, they’ve got my skin

My borderlands are where I don’t feel right and for me that place is on

a scary height when I'm on a height

My body is filled with fright

My ethnicity is Portuguese

I adore the foods we eat

America is where I am my home

My land I love where I live

To get me out, there’s nothing you could give

My life revolves around fiction

It controls my life

Its like a addiction

Without it I would die

The epic scenes, sending chills down my spine

Anime is my life

Goya infused with my blood

Spice is a daily routine, with it it wouldn’t be Portuguese

I'm quiet, total opposite of what people would think

This is who I am

Center of attention

This is my fear

It is my borderland

It closes me off to the world

Puts me in a shell

Keeps me hidden

Keeps me safe

THIS IS ME !
