Math Team

Faculty Advisor: Steve Carter

The B.M.C. Durfee math team participates in the New England Math League.  Through the Academic year there are six Math League contests that are all administered simultaneously to each of the participating schools in the New England Section.  The Contests are actually administered throughout the country as well.   Each contest contains six diverse math questions that cover all math topics from simple Algebra up through Pre-Calculus.  The first question traditionally is a problem that involves the year number, so this year the problems have had the number 2012 or 2013.   Generally the questions are harder towards the end of the contest with the sixth being very challenging.  Each contestant takes up to a half hour to complete and students may use any kind of calculator during the test.  We usually meet on Thursdays after school to practice old contest questions in IMC-7.

Contest Dates This year will be:

Thursday     10/18/12

Thursday      11/15/12

Thursday     12/23/12

Thursday     1/17/13

Thursday     2/14/13

Thursday     3/7/13

A team score for each contest consists of the top five results of the members of the team that took the test.  The results of each contest are submitted online to the Math League Web Site and anyone can follow the standings of each school by directing a web browser to http://www.themathleague.com/ and clicking on the contest results link in the left column.

This year the B.M.C. Durfee team has had about ten regular members with more showing up for each contest.  Many of the teachers in the Math department will give participants extra credit for the effort demonstrated by the dedication of the team members.  Anyone is welcome to participate from any level math class for any contest.  Participation looks great on college applications.
