Welcome to Mrs. Reed's Social Studies class!

I am very proud and excited to announce that this year my students and I have been invited to again serve as O Ambassadors!

The O Ambassadors program is a joint project of Oprah Winfrey's Angel Network and Kids Can Free the Children.  The program educates students using four themes: poverty, education, health, and sustainable development.  The aim of the program is to inspire young people to become active and compassionate global citizens by connecting youth in North America with disadvantage children in the developing world, thus building bridges of understanding and encouraging lifelong community service.

Last year, my students raised nearly $2,000.00 to help end poverty, stamp out death from preventable diseases, build schools in remote areas, and save our fragile environment!  All this, while learning about geography, natural resources, climate, population, governments, economies, and cultures all over the world.  In addition, the program aligns perfectly with the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework Standards.

During the coming weeks, I will sending more information to parents about the program and our fund-raising activities. Please get involved by asking your child what they are learning and how they are changing the world.  Encourage your child by letting him/her know how  proud you are of the important work they are doing.  You will be amazed by what your child will teach YOU!

Again, I am very proud to be working with your child as an O Ambassador. As a teacher, it is very rewarding to be able to teach in such a creative, global, and socially responsible manner.

Parents:   On Tuesday, November 4, we will participate in a mock election.

Students will read about the two Presidential candidates, Barack Obama and John McCain and their running mates, Joseph Biden and Sarah Palin.  The students will  debate the important issues and their candidate's platforms  before they make their choices.

On Monday, November 3, a Presidential Candidates Assignment wil be given to students to take home. Parents and their children should read over the information as to where the candidates stand on the issues.  Parents, this is a great opportunity to participate in a meaningful dialouge with your children. Students, you will be able to take some time with your parents, and show them what you have learned about the candidates.

The next Skills Assessment will be held on Friday, November 7.
