The dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if you're willing to pay the price.    -Vince Lombardi

What will we learn in Mr. Michon’s math class?

We will focus primarily on three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe relationships; (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

Why do we study math?

Students often ask when they will use the things we learn in math. With certainty, I have no way of knowing what someone will need to know in their future. I do know that with more understanding you will be better prepared for the future. Here are 10 reasons to study mathematics…

10. Math is everywhere. Studying math gives us a better understanding of the world around us.

9. Mathematicians initiated the development of computers and future developments will surely be made by mathematicians

8. Making a great discovery in mathematics can make you rich and famous. The Clay Mathematics Institute offers a $1,000,000 prize to anyone that can solve one of seven problems that they have posed. That’s $7,000,000 if you can solve all seven.

7. The physical sciences (chemistry, physics, oceanography, astronomy), use math to develop theories.

6. An understanding of probability and statistics is essential in many fields including: medicine, psychology, ecology, business, sports, journalism, sociology, insurance, gaming (casinos)…

5. Math can be found in art through the use of geometry, and the beauty of ratios and proportion.

4. MONEY! An understanding of math will help you earn and save more money.

3. You can study math for fun. A math problem is just a puzzle. Math can be used win card/board games. It will even help you while playing video games.

2. Studying math helps develop critical thinking skills.

1. If you can do math, you can do anything!
