OVERVIEW
Welcome to the start of an exciting year in the Henry Lord Middle School Music program! Band is a performing ensemble that meets every other day as a group. The ensemble will play a variety of styles of music that will come from diverse historical and cultural periods. In addition to learning the basics of music theory and performance practices, students will be exposed to various aspects of music history. Music instruction fosters reflective, analytical thinking as students consider how the abstract relates to the concrete world. Class activities include individual and group performances of musical selections on wind and percussion instruments. Music performance activities create opportunities for personal growth and exploration of self in a safe and positive learning environment. A variety of instructional strategies are employed including modeling, peer teaching, rote learning and drill, cooperative groups and independent learning. Band rehearsals require an atmosphere of listening and cooperation and help to develop school pride and mutual respect.
EXPECTATIONS
Each student is expected to provide his or her own band instrument. Any student using a school instrument should treat it as his or her own and is responsible for paying a $30.00 yearly maintenance fee. The student is expected to bring their instrument, music folder and book to each class. Students are also expected to keep the instrument clean and in good working order. Students are expected to practice at home. This can be accomplished in a few quality minutes per day, and will pay off in many ways. This is especially important because band meets every other day as a class, and it is the student’s job to take what they have learned in class and master it at home. Instruments should go home weekly. Practicing cannot happen if the instrument remains in the locker. No instruments should be left in lockers over the weekend. Students will be expected to commit to band for the entire school year. This means participation in concerts, parade, band parent night and after school rehearsals for these events. Every student is necessary and can contribute to a successful concert. Several after school rehearsals are scheduled to bring the entire ensemble together when preparing for concerts. Attendance is mandatory and students should be on time for all scheduled classes and rehearsals.
BAND RULES
1. The band room and all of its contents are to be treated with respect
2. When you arrive, get instrument and music stand ready immediately- 3 minutes from the time the bell rings or you will lose points from your participation grade for that day. Being late to class may also result in losing participation points for the day and repeated offenses may result in after school detention.
3. No gum chewing, food or drinks in the band room
4. Put away all materials, instruments, sticks, mallets, music stands, etc. before leaving the rehearsal area
5. If you are not a drummer- stay away from the percussion equipment!
GRADING POLICY
Daily participation/preparation- (Class participation/ attitude) 40%
Concert/ performance/ rehearsal participation (including after school) 30%
Performance taped tests (or written test) 15%
Homework (practicing, Bringing instrument/ music home and back to school) 15%
* Students who do not attend a mandatory performance such as a concert (Winter and Spring), parade, band parent night or graduation will lose 10 points from their final grade for that quarter for each event missed. One event (other than the Winter or Spring concert) can be an excused absence with a note from a parent stating the reason for the absence. However, if there is no note it is not considered an excused absence. Unexcused absences will result in a lowered grade and removal from a field trip or Paw Sox game. Remember that band is a team and all members of the team are needed for all events!
Taped Tests- Taped tests will be on material from the band literature we are working on at the time and excerpts from the Standard of Excellence books. Tapes may also include any scales or additional material provided by the teacher. Students are expected to turn in tapes by the end of the quarter, failure to do so will result in a grade of zero for the performance taped test.
Due dates for the taped tests will be one week prior to the end of the quarter
* Please do not wait until the last minute to express problems you are having with the taped tests. I am available for extra help before and after school on most days. Often, a seemingly huge problem can be easily solved in a matter of minutes before or after school with me. If you are feeling frustrated with your music or instrument, it is better to talk to the teacher early on rather than let it get to the point where your grade is in jeopardy. Remember- your job is to EARN a good grade, not have it handed to you.
Extra Credit
Extra Credit can be earned through the following things:
- Hand in signed practice log at the end of the quarter (3 points)
- Participation in Jr. All State Audition (3 points) November
- Participation in Jr. All State Festival (5 points) March
- Participation in Jr. SEMSBA Audition (3 points) February
