It's been a winless season so far for the Toppers' Ice Hockey team, but the boys played one of their best games of the season against their Big 3 rival New Bedford this past Saturday night.

Durfee is 0-1 so far in the Big 3, losing to Brockton. New Bedford is also 0-1 in the Big 3, who also losing to Brockton. Last season the Toppers were winless going into the game against New Bedford, and were able to pick up their first win with a score of 7-2. The second meeting last season between the two teams ended in a tie.

It was a battle for most of the first period as the two teams were scoreless until the Toppers were able to get on the scoreboard first for the first time this season. Junior Jordan Raposo got his second goal of the season assisted by seniors Tyler Amaral and Lucas Saunders.

Unfortunately, the lead didn't last long as New Bedford tied up the score on the very next shift resulting in a 1-1 score after the first period. The second period was yet another battle at the beginning of the period with both teams playing physical. After a blown call that would've put Durfee on the power play, New Bedford instead was able to score to take the lead 2-1.

What has been killing the Toppers this season is the inconsistency to play three strong periods. Once again the Toppers were unable to keep the momentum going as they quickly fell behind 4-1.

In the third period the Toppers were able to shake off the second period by producing some shots on net, keeping New Bedford on their heels. Finally, with about a half the period to go, junior John Bonanca scored top shelf, which was assisted by Saunders to cut the lead in half.

With some great goal-tending by Ryan Levassuer, New Bedford did not score in the third period. With 1:30 left in the game, The Toppers pulled Levassuer to get an extra attacker generating some heavy pressure in New Bedford's zone. But it wasn't enough, and New Bedford was handed the win at 4-2.
