On Saturday, October 13, the Durfee girls soccer team traveled up to Bishop Stang in hopes of completing one of their goals of making it to the state tournament. They were two points away, which meant all they needed was one more win.

The game started in Stang's favor when they immediately took the ball down the field and scored against Durfee making it 1-0. As the Spartans celebrated, the Lady Toppers all looked at each other on the field knowing that they had to step it up. They did just that as they kept pressing the Stang defense creating many opportunities, but not being able to find the back of the net.

That all changed with two minutes remaining in the first half when senior Jenna Melo went on a breakaway and was brought down by the Stang keeper. With a huge ruckus in the box, no one knew what call was made and who it favored. The Spartan goalkeeper had to be substituted due to an injury, and they were forced to put a backup goalie in the net. Things just got worse for the Spartans from there when the Referees announced that it was a penalty kick for Durfee.

Bailey Brooks was able to find the back of the net putting the ball past the substitute goal keeper. With the half ending 1-1 you could tell that the game wasn't over yet, and there was still much more to come.

Durfee started off with the momentum, however that quickly changed when the Toppers made a defensive error, and Stang was able to put the ball in the bottom left of the net to give them the lead once again. This changed the game entirely, Durfee had a huge challenge ahead of them once again, and had to score at least two goals to win and put them in the state tournament.

The Spartans received a red card after one of their players threw a punch. Durfee was now a man up, and took advantage of it when Brooks scored another goal, this time from 30 yards out off a free kick. The Toppers weren't done yet, and knew they knew they needed one more. They got just that when Melo put the ball on a platter for sophomore Alexis Anselmo who was able to put it past the Stang goalie to give Durfee the lead which ended up being the game winner.

The game finished 3-2 with Durfee beating Stang. This not only meant this was Durfee's 7th win of the season, it also meant that the Lady Toppers were now tournament bound, accomplishing something that they hadn't done in three years.

With five games remaining, the Lady Toppers look to continue their win streak and give them a high seed in the state tournament.
