The Durfee golf team started off the 2012 season a little differently. For the past 30 years, the golf coach has been the one and only Richard Roy. Coach Roy decided to step down last season and will be remembered as one of the most respected coaches at Durfee. Now at the helm is Durfee alum Michael Letendre. Letendre is looking to take the Topper golf team back to the state tournament for the 2nd year in a row

The Hilltoppers (2-5) recently came off a Big 3 loss against rivals Brockton and New Bedford last Thursday finishing third in a tri-match at Thorny Lea Country Club in Brockton. Senior captain Andrew Furtado led the Toppers with the best score, shooting a 40. “The team played as best as they could and put out a good effort. As a team, we are feeling confident about the next Big 3 matches,” said Furtado.

The Toppers next match is Thursday at Whaling City Country Club in New Bedford for another Big 3 tri-match.  If Brockton is able to pull off another win, they automatically make the state tournament.

Last season, Brockton and New Bedford won the first two tri-matches for the Big 3 title. The Toppers were the underdogs going into the last match and were able to pull off a great win which resulted in a three way tie that sent Brockton, New Bedford, and Durfee to the state tournament. The Toppers only hope to win the Big 3 title now is if they win the next two matches, the next one in New Bedford, and the last one in Fall River.
