On Friday, September 9, the Hilltopper varsity football team faced the Barnstable Red Raiders on the Mac Aldrich field.

The Toppers had a very slow start, allowing Barnstable to return their opening kickoff for a touchdown. With a good point after try (PAT), the score became 7-0. The Red Raiders quickly regained possession of the ball by recovering a fumble that was a result of a bad snap. Barnstable scored four plays later on a quarterback run. With another good point after kick the Red Raiders led 14-0. Despite this setback, Durfee played tough throughout the first half.

Durfee’s offense responded to Barnstable with a long 17 play drive. The Hilltoppers brought the ball 73 yards, and put six points on the board when running-back senior captain Raheem Barzey made it to the endzone on a four yard run. After the missed PAT, the score was 14-6.

Barnstable quickly answered with a fast no huddle drive to make the score 21-6. Durfee punted on their next possession. The Hilltoppers then made their only defensive stop, when junior Joe Henine intercepted a pass with 3:35 to go in the half. Senior captain Spencer Borden was forced to punt for the Toppers, leaving the Raiders on their eight yard line. Barnstable put together another successful drive, scoring with 13 seconds left in the half, making the score 28-6.

After half time Barnstable scored twice in the third quarter, while Durfee’s offense lacked the intensity that showed in the first quarter. The Red Raiders scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, with Durfee’s defense failing to stop them, finishing the game 55-6. The Red Raiders missed one PAT, with the ball deflecting off of senior captain Emmanuel Fernandes’ hand.

It was an upsetting loss for the Toppers with junior quarterback Travellis Oliver leading the team with 47 yards on eight carries, and completed four of nine passes for 38 yards
