On Thursday, March 31, the season opener for B.M.C. Durfee High School’s varsity softball team was held in Seekonk, versus Seekonk High School. As it was the first game of the season for both teams, everyone was anxious to grab the first win.

Durfee’s very young varsity team was anxious yet excited for their first game of the season. The Hilltoppers entered this season with only four returning seniors, co-captains, Amanda Cordeiro, pitcher, and Sara Perreira, short stop, as well as second baseman Danielle Gauvin and outfielder Brittany Correia. Helping out on the pitching mound this year are sophomores Kara Prevost and Tara McCann. On the other hand, behind the plate will be sophomore Darrien Hassey and senior Carina Paz.

To prepare for this first match the team had a scrimmage as well as a jamboree, where they went undefeated. As the team entered their first game, confidence was high. The confidence the team held shined through throughout the game as the Hilltoppers took an early lead. By the third inning the team was up 13-4, with bats coming from all around. After the fourth inning however the game was postponed to a later date due to unplayable weather.
