The Durfee football team could not have started the season any better. Claiming their first victory and breaking a 24 game losing streak, the toppers came through with a 21-6 win over Bishop Connolly in the season opened on Friday.

Two touchdowns from senior captain Michael Correia and one touchdown from senior Brian DeMelo and a two point conversion. “I’ve never been more proud of my teammates” said Correia. “We just practice and play by what coach

Correia carries the team with his first touch down.

Cummings taught us: One heartbeat, one team. We played the game like it was 0-0 the whole way through and never let up.”

The first touchdown by DeMelo gave Durfee both the lead and the confidence they needed to come out on top. Connolly answered with a touchdown of their own, but could not maintain the Durfee offensive. The second touchdown came from a beautiful pass from quarterback Jaren Viera and was caught in the back of the end zone by Correia. Correia scored his second touchdown soon after.

Key stops on defense from Seniors Brad Kilby, Alex Benevides and Martin Madina gave Connolly no chance of getting past Durfee. Offensively, junior Eli Brooks and Colby Cabral also helped the toppers put this one away. “It was the best team effort we’ve had in a while, and no one gave up.” Cabral said. This win was just what the toppers needed, hopefully many more lie ahead.
