On October 9, B.M.C. Durfee High School held a ceremony to honor students who received high performance scores on their MCAS testing during their freshman and sophomore years.

The John and Abigail Adams Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship that only the top students in Massachusetts are awarded. One has to score advanced in either math or English portion of the Massachusetts Comprehension Assessment System. The scholarship enables free tuition to any state school.

Eighty-one Hilltoppers were presented the award in front of the Durfee administration. During the assembly, guidance counselors Denise Boland and Tricia Pliess informed the students that one has to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and listed the schools the scholarship applies to. The honorary scholarship helps make colleges in our state more affordable. Students were then announced and walked across the stage to receive the award.

"It was an honor to receive this award and it's comforting to know that all my hard work will certainly pay off in the future," said senior Shelbie Souza.

Seniors find relief in having significant financial help to fall back on. Souza advises all underclassmen to work hard to achieve high MCAS scores so they will be rewarded with this helpful scholarship in the future.
