Durfee Boys' Volleyball Mid-Season Update

So far the Hilltop Boys' Volleyball team has been doing well in their season, keeping a .500 win loss percentage. Currently the Volleyball team is at 5-5. So far in the season they have lost to Taunton, Brockton, New Bedford Voc., North Quincy, and Barnstable. They have also beaten Quincy twice, New Bedford, Taunton on another occasion, and Wareham. Their biggest win was against Quincy the second time they faced them, with scores of 25-10, 25-11, 25-20.

Inspiring Start in Vain

Opening Day has arrived here at Durfee and we couldn't have been more excited. The Durfee Boys Baseball team shipped off to Bishop Feehan for the start of the season on Monday, April 1st. When the boys walked off the bus, they knew that Feehan was in for a rude awakening. They had been preparing for this game ever since they just missed making the State Tournament by a hair last season.

 

Winter Sports Banquet Wraps Up Season

Durfee's winter sports teams wrapped up their seasons at the sports banquet on Friday, March 22, in the the Nagle Auditorium. The teams in attendance were boys' and girls' basketball, boys' and girls' track, ice hockey, boys' swimming and dive, and wrestling. Many athletes received their first varsity letters, and some also received individual awards on their accomplishments in each sport.

Bay State Baseball Hitting Clinic Comes To Durfee

It was heartbreaking, and it was hard to watch, but it had to happen eventually. After an exhilarating 3 months of non-stop basketball, the Durfee girls season finally came to a close on Friday night at the Skip Karam basketball court. After coming off a victory in their first state tournament game against North Quincy, the Lady Hilltoppers were looking to punch their ticket into the Semi-Finals but ran into a full of steam, giant killing Newton South.

Durfee Girls Qualify for State Tournament

People say defense is the best offense, and in Durfee's case, they were right. Coming into their 14th game of the season, all the Lady Toppers had to do was defeat Dartmouth in order to clinch an early state tournament spot. With a lot of defense, and some sharp counter attacks, the Hilltoppers did just that, defeating the Indians with a score of 39-24 on Tuesday night.

Toppers Boxed Out

Friday night at the Luke Urban Field House the Durfee boys basketball team were outshined by a very talented Brockton Boxers. The Boxers played as if they did not know how to miss, as they scored eight three pointers in the first quarter alone. It didn't help that the Hilltoppers came out slow and could not make a shot against the quick Boxers team. After one quarter alone the score was 26-8.

On Friday night, the Durfee Girls Basketball team shipped up to Brockton in hopes to get their first win in the conference opener. Knowing that it has been at least four years since the Toppers had gotten a win on the Boxers' court, the girls knew they had to come out strong if they wanted to break the streak. Toppers Take Over

It took a whole half for the Hilltoppers to get rolling, but once they did it is safe to say they were unstoppable. A marvelous comeback saw the Durfee Hilltoppers beat the Taunton Tigers with a 50-48 victory. The Hilltoppers scored only 6 points in the first quarter, as Brianna Camara hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer. While the Hilltoppers struggled to score, Taunton had no problems as they had hit multiple 3 pointers. The second quarter wasn't any better having only 8 points in the second quarter ending the half with a 13 point deficit, 23-11.

All the Lady Hilltoppers needed to do was not lose - and they did just that. The Durfee girls soccer team captured the Big 3 Championship for the first time since 2008, after tying New Bedford on Thursday 2-2. Durfee came into the game with the advantage, only needing a win or a tie to clinch the title. While the Whalers needed a win to share a piece of the title with the Lady Toppers.

The Durfee golf team started off the 2012 season a little differently. For the past 30 years, the golf coach has been the one and only Richard Roy. Coach Roy decided to step down last season and will be remembered as one of the most respected coaches at Durfee. Now at the helm is Durfee alum Michael Letendre. Letendre is looking to take the Topper golf team back to the state tournament for the 2nd year in a row.

Benevides Wins State Championship

This weekend, Durfee student, Eric Benevides joined an elite group of wrestlers after tackling the Division 1 State Championship. Without a single earned point scored on him, Benevides was able to pin his opponent in the first period during the finals locking in his spot as the sixth State Champion from Durfee. On his side was the former 1998 Durfee State Champion, Chris Antao who was there coaching the standout.

On Friday, February 10, the Durfee Girls Basketball team received their 10th win during their away game against Bishop Stang High School. This important win locked in their spot at the state tournament, something they have not done since 2010. The Durfee Girl's held the lead throughout the entire game with a final score of 38-23.

On Thursday, October 27, the Durfee High School girls varsity soccer team (7-9-1) faced their Big 3 rival, the New Bedford Whalers (5-11-2), on Durfee’s home turf. The first time these teams faced off this season the Whalers came out on top, and this time around the Durfee Hilltoppers were back for revenge. In the end the Toppers gained their vengeance, winning with a score of 2-1.

On Thursday, September 22, at the Karen Jarabek pool, the Durfee girls' swim team defeated Brockton to gain the title of Big 3 Champions. The Durfee girls defeated Brockton with a score of 110-75, which was a great win for Durfee after defeating New Bedford the week before.

Durfee Soccer Off to a Good Start

On Tuesday, September 27, the Durfee girls varsity soccer team (3-3) faced the Somerset-Berkley Raiders (2-3) at home. After a close game the Hilltoppers managed to pull off a win with a final score of 2-0.

Durfee Field Hockey Season Begins

The Durfee High School varsity field hockey team has started their season off strong with a great group of girls who are willing to play hard and push themselves to gain success for their team. On Friday, September 16, the team faced Taunton High School, ending with a score of 1-1. Center Forward Maggie Toure scored the lone goal for the team; this was the first official goal of the season by the Toppers.

Daddona leaves his mark

On April 29, Jeff Daddona, a senior at Durfee High School, became the first student-athlete at his school to get 1,000 assists in his high school volleyball career. As a four-time varsity player and captain of the team, Daddona is proud of what he and his team have accomplished throughout the season.

Durfee baseball needs some warming up

The Durfee Baseball team is currently 8-5 after a hot start of 6-0 with great offense and terrific defense. The bats for the Hilltoppers have slowed down, and a tough three-game losing streak to New Bedford, Brockton, and Coyle Cassidy has effected the teams confidence. But after prevailing over Diman and Taunton in their previous two games, the Hilltoppers are getting back on track.

On Wednesday, May 4, the Durfee Boys' Volleyball team extended their win streak with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-22 sweep against perennial powerhouse Barnstable High School to improve their record to 10-3, while the Red Raiders dropped to 11-2.

Boys volleyball wins fourth straight

After winning two straight games against Randolph and Wareham High Schools, the Durfee Boys’ Volleyball team had an impressive 25-9, 25-12, 25-14 three game sweep against Taunton on April 26. The Hilltoppers then kept their streak alive by defeating Quincy High School the following day.

Track teams kick off winter season

On Tuesday, December 7, 2010, the boys' and girls' track teams started off the winter season at Durfee with a relay meet at Wheaten College in Norton, MA. The teams that attended the meet were Barnstable, Dartmouth, Taunton, Bridgewater-Raynham, and Durfee. No points were kept at the meet because it was a scrimmage, but the Durfee track teams won many of the events.

Football coach resigns; new applicants sought

Durfee High School Head Football coach Robb McCoy announced on November 25, 2010 that he would not bereturning as the Hilltopper’s coach. This announcement came just house after the Hilltoppers were defeated by the New Bedford Whalers 21-7 on their treasured Thanksgiving rival game. McCoy told the players of his decision during the post game speech.
