It’s
never too soon to start preparing! That’s what the students at the
Greene Elementary School believe. Over one hundred students from
grades 3 – 5 are taking part in an afterschool Reading and Math Academy
from now until May. Each week students spend up to an extra four and
hour a half hours after school working in small groups to get ready for
the Reading MCAS is March and the Math MCAS in May. Academy teachers
use the students’ district benchmark results to drive instruction; the
small group size allows the teachers to give each student individualized
attention. During each Math session, students practice number strings, investigating real-life situations and conferencing with their teacher, in order to develop strategies to help them solve problems efficiently. Students also spend time practicing test taking strategies, reading word problems, finding important information and answering open response questions. Students in the Reading Academy use their time to improve their Reading Skills. They also practice test taking skill by reading and answering MCAS selections from previous years. Students are taught effective approaches for composing written Reading responses. All Academy students are building endurance in test taking.
It is wonderful to see so many students playing an active part in their education! One teacher described everyone’s motivation and excitement surrounding the program, “Students in the hallway say to me that they cannot wait to come to the Academy and learn more. One student said during Math Academy, ‘Mrs. McCarthy, I think my brain is sweating.’ This is an awesome thing for our kids and I am so glad to be part of it”. Hats off to the Academy teachers and students for the extra effort they are exerting!
