10-6-11 Golf Team Wins Share of Big 3 Crown
Behind
a solid team performance, the golf team knocked off both Big 3
Conference rivals, Brockton and New Bedford to gain a share of the
league title. With all three tri-matches having been completed, the
teams all finish with 3-3 records to share the conference crown. The
title earns the Hilltoppers a berth in the post-season state tournament.
Having split in the first tri-match, Durfee lost to both Brockton and New Bedford the second time around and went into the final match needing to sweep. The Toppers were able to do just that thanks to some solid depth in the scoring.
In the Stableford scoring system, in which each golfer earns a certain number of points per hole, Durfee finished tied with Brockton after the first six golfers. That sent it to the tie-breaker and the Toppers' next best score of 13 points by both Brandon Miller and Ryan Costa was four points better than Brockton's seventh finisher.
"I’m very happy with the result," said veterna Durfee coach Mr. Richard Roy. "We went in under the gun. We had to win both to succeed and we pulled through."
The Hilltoppers were led by an outstanding 23-point performance from John O'Neil. Andrew Furtado also had a great day with 21 points, while Tyler Winn finished with 18. Rounding out Durfee's top six were Zach Charrette with 16 points and Abel Viveiros and Ryan Levasseur with 15 each.
